What is the difference between LED bulbs and LED filament bulbs?
LED filament bulbs are designed to imitate traditional incandescent bulbs.
They are a hybrid of LED and traditional bulbs, taking the best from each type.
With the aesthetic value of incandescent bulbs and the efficiency of LED bulbs, LED filament bulbs to have the potential to suit more customers.
Why is this important?
You can extend your market!
Also LED filament bulbs are typically 40% more efficient than plain LED lights.
That is because LED filament bulbs radiate less heat due to their design using high voltage and low current.
As a bonus, LED filament bulbs emit softer, warmer, and more natural light – and most people and businesses want just that.
How do LEDs work?
Light Emitting Diodes in filament bulbs work the same way as do normal LEDs.
It is a semiconductor that emits transforms electrical energy into light.
Do LED lights have a filament?
LED filament bulbs don’t have a conventional filament, but rather the filament is made out of LEDs.
How do LEDs get turned into LED filaments?
An LED filament is made by connecting LEDs in a series on transparent glass, sapphire, or ceramic surface.
This technique is called “Chip-On-Glass”.
Sapphire tends to be the most prominent on the market for its heat-dissipating properties.
It is also the most costly.
Then, the strip is covered with a silicone binder.
The bulb shells are usually made of glass.
Are LED filament bulbs dimmable?
Most are, but you should contact the manufacturer to make sure.
What do lumens mean?
A lumen is an important measure of how visibly bright a lightbulb is.
You can convert lumens to watts and vice versa using this website.
What does light distribution angle mean and why is that important?
Light distribution angle, or beam angle, measure how much area is covered by light.
Normal LEDs have a light distribution angle of 180 degrees because they are mounted on a flat surface.
On the contrary, LED filament bulbs are better in the sense that they have a 360-degree angle of light distribution since they are facing out instead of up.
This means that LED filament bulbs provide more light for less energy.
Thus, your company or your clients’ company can save on electricity bill while enjoying good lighting.
Are there any general design issues or cons for LED filament bulbs?
If the silicone used is cheap, it will start breaking down after 200 hours of use.
This results in the LED string breaking as well.
If you and your team wants to check this silicone binder quality, just light up the bulb leave it for about 10 days, then have your team analyze it.
Another general design issue is blue light leakage, which changes colour temperature and may result in patchy colour.
Additionally, LED lights are prone to overheating.
However, LED filament bulbs have overcome this problem, since they have many small, low-power LEDs that are a lot less vulnerable to heat.
Note that cold conditions do not affect LED performance, unlike CFLs.
What are bulb sockets?
Bulb sockets are places in a lamp where you screw a bulb in.
An important general feature of LED filament bulbs is that its dimensions match those of traditional incandescent bulbs.
This means that LED filament bulbs are compatible with sockets that previously used traditional bulbs.
Thus, you can expand your clientele and convert incandescent users to LED filaments.
What is replacement wattage?
This indicates a wattage of an incandescent bulb that is equivalent to an LED filament bulb.
For example, an 8 watt LED filament bulb with a replacement wattage of 40 watts is as bright as a traditional bulb of 40 watts.
This provides a point of comparison and helps incandescent bulb users to seamlessly switch to LED filament bulbs.
Knowing this will help you and your clients choose the best, safest, and most efficient LED filament replacement.
Are LED filament bulbs dangerous?
LED filament bulbs are not nearly as dangerous as their plain LED siblings – and LEDs aren’t that dangerous either.
Normally, LED bulbs do use heavy metals like nickel, but they are not harmful as long as no one is directly inhaling fumes from a broken bulb.
Because LED filaments use smaller LEDs, the amount of these materials is even less.
Another concern with LEDs is that their bright and concentrated light is harmful to the eyes.
However, LED filaments have a 360-degree beam angle, so the light is softer and less sharp.
To conclude, LED filament bulbs are some of the safest lighting products, so you and your business don’t need to worry that someone will sue you.
LED filament bulbs are also mercury-free and lead-free, not to mention that they are free of ultraviolet and infra-red rays.
What do lifetime hours mean?
LED filament bulb’s lifetime hours is a measure of how long a bulb can maintain its brightness until it degrades to a certain level.
Some measure lifetime hours until the output becomes 70% of the original, some until 50%.
Either way, it is not a measure of how long a bulb functions until it burns out completely – just until it becomes dimmer.
What do L70 and L50 mean?
This has to do with lumen maintenance.
Similar to lifetime hours, it measures light, or lumen, the output of a new bulb compared to its output sometime later.
L50 and L70 represent these measures.
They are like thresholds of 50% and 70% output.
It is not a big deal if bulbs go dimmer in a warehouse, but it is problematic if that happens in a cafe or museum.
Therefore, it is important to keep lumen maintenance in mind if you’re selling to businesses – or if you have one – where lighting quality is especially important.
Can LED bulbs be used in enclosed fixtures?
Only some brands since enclosed fixtures cause overheating.
However, LED filament bulbs are less prone to that.
What is Lux?
Lux is a measurement of lumen per square meter.
Thus, it takes into account the area that light covers and can provide useful information about the concentration of light and how far it reaches.
Why are LED filament bulbs expensive?
Partly because the materials used, such as sapphire, are expensive on their own.
Another reason is because the field of LED filament bulbs is relatively unexplored, so this technology needs a lot of research and finances.
As research becomes more extensive, prices will fall.
What is an IP rating?
An IP rating tells you how protected a bulb against the elements a bulb is.
The first digit shows protection against solids, such as dust.
The second digit shows protection against liquids.
If you are planning to sell LED filament bulbs to be placed outside, you need these digits to be higher.
If the bulbs will be used indoors, your ideal rating should be around IP54 – this protects against ubiquitous dust and some water splashes.
You can use lower ratings as well.
What does a base code mean?
A base code shows the type of base a bulb has and what it is compatible with.
Most LED filament bulbs have bases in the E series, which stands for Edison.
This is the standard base – the same as incandescent.
The number after E is the measurement of base diameter in millimeters.
E26 tends to be the most popular base. Some LED filament bulbs also have bases in the B series.
This is a bayonet type base that is popular in the UK. If you would like to learn more, visit here.
What is a Power Factor?
The Power Factor is the ratio of real power to apparent power. In other words, how well we think a bulb is working versus how well it is actually working.
Ideally, this ratio should be 1.0, or 1 to 1. However, this is rare. You should try to find bulbs with a PF value of no less than 0.9. If you would like to delve more into this, visit here.
Do LED filament bulbs get hot?
Yes, but not as much as incandescent bulbs and not enough to cause severe damage to its surroundings. LED filament bulbs are also usually cool to the touch.
What is an A60 bulb?
This code tells you the physical characteristics of the bulb.
The letter – A – means that the bulb has a traditional pear-like shape.
The number that follows it corresponds to the diameter of the bulb at its widest point. Beware!
This code can vary depending on what system it’s using.
For example, A60 (metric system) is the same as A19 (imperial system) used in the US.
A60 is in millimeters, while A19 is in ⅛ of an inch.
Other bulb shapes have other codes as well.
What is each LED filament arrangement for?
SMAlux offers an array of different filament arrangements that each have their own effects and purposes.
For example, bulbs with amber-coloured glass shell provide a comfortable warm light perfect for artful cafes and bars.
If a bulb has many filaments, that will also serve for better visual effects.
On the other hand, LED filaments in a criss-cross pattern reduce shadows for uniform lighting.
This could be great for various business showrooms and even photography studios!
What is colour temperature?
Without getting too much into physics, it is the temperature a special radiator emanates when it is lit up with a certain colour.
This is expressed in Kelvins.
For example, colour temperatures from 2700-3000K are considered warm colours.
These include amber, yellow, red, orange, and so on.
On the other hand, colour temperatures over 5000K are considered cool colours like blue and purple.
How do LED filament bulbs radiate differently colored light?
Typically, LEDs radiate blue light.
This can be changed by coating the silicone binder with certain substances like yellow phosphor to achieve a warm white light.
Some manufacturers also use a mixture of blue and red LEDs as well as phosphor to create more accurate colors.
Knowing colour temperature is useful when choosing the coating of the bulb and the colour of light you want.
Why are color temperatures important?
For example, warm white light is great for residential areas because of a cozy environment they create.
Meanwhile, cool white light is an idea for warehouses and utility areas since they are too bright for living spaces.
For more information, you can visit here.
What is the Colour Rendering Index (CRI)?
It is also known as the RA value.
This measures how accurately can a light source reflect colours.
For example, a bulb with a low rating will make all colours look orange and distorted.
The CRI is especially crucial if you are importing bulbs for businesses with showrooms, museums, and art exhibits.

Can I check LED filament bulb quality myself?
You can surely request various reports from manufacturers, including a LM-80 report or an equivalent.
But if you or your business partners want to test the quality yourselves, you can do some quick tests.
For example, you can check the quality of the LED driver.
To do that all you need is a bulb and a phone.
Just light up the bulb and record it on your phone.
If you see waves of light scurrying on the filament, the bulb may be prone to flickering, which may not be A good sign.
While you may not notice this pulsing of light with a naked eye, it does affect overall health and feelings.
It is likely that all LED filament bulbs will pulse somewhat, but the lower its rate, the better.
You can also check this by putting a pencil in front of the light – if you see several pencils, then the pulsing rate is high.
What is the future of the LED filament bulb market?
According to market analysts, the market value of LED filament bulbs is projected to skyrocket to 1.8-2 billion US dollars.
This niche has been on a steady rise but began to gain an especially huge following in 2018.
Many governments are banning incandescent lights, clearing the way for LED filament products.
However, because LED filament bulbs have a lifespan of approximately 10 years, it is easier to generate sales short-term.
Even with that, this industry has a lot of potential and room for growth.
