The Ultimate Guide to LED Wall Lights

What are some types of wall lights that SMAlux offers?

SMAlux offers designs for LED indoor wall lights, outdoor wall lights, stair lights, and sconce lights.

Within these, we have lots of designs that you can choose from or take inspiration from when developing your own design.

Besides this, some other types of LED wall lights include downlights, uplights, and adjustable lights.

Downlights direct their light down onto the ground, while uplights illuminate the ceiling.

Adjustable lights have moveable arms, like book lights.

Feel free to reach out to find out more!

What are downlights, uplights, and adjustable lights used for?

Downlights are more practical than uplights.

They can be used to illuminate a wall, a hallway, even stairs.

These are also called direct lights.

Uplights are more or less purely decorative.

They act as an accent light on the wall, the ceiling, maybe art along the walls, and hallways.

These are called indirect lights.

There also are combined lights that are both up- and downlights, which are called semi-direct or semi-indirect.

Directions the light can go in

Directions the light can go in

Adjustable lights are also very practical.

They can be used as book lights or desk lights.

Being wall lights, they save space on the desk and provides convenience in moving the light to point in different directions.

What types of lighting are there?

There is accent lighting, task lighting, and general lighting.

Accent lighting is purely decorative. It shines on an object or piece of the wall to make the aesthetic more dramatic or bring attention to something.

These are used in galleries and cafes.

LED wall lights are used for accent lighting to zero in on a painting or the wall.

Task lighting is when the light is directed onto something like a table, where it serves a practical purpose.

Such lights are used in garages and workshops. As for wall lights, adjustable ones are perfect for that.

They allow the light to be directed exactly where necessary.

Finally, general lighting is when you want to illuminate the whole space, so wall lights can’t do that alone – they would need some other light source to help.

But, wall lights are still great for general lighting when they have wide beams that “wash” the wall with light.

Here, sconce lights are the way to go.

Types of lighting

Types of lighting

What types of adjustable wall lights are there?

There are several different design features regarding the necks/arms of adjustable wall lights.

These can be jointed, straight, or gooseneck.

Choosing which one you want to request depends on the aesthetic you are going for.

Gooseneck wall lights have a modern and futuristic look, whereas jointed and straight lights can be more vintage-looking.

Jointed and gooseneck lights have the same range of motion except goosenecks can swing sideways.

Jointed lights can do that as well, but that is less common.

As for LED lights with straight necks, they also can have any range of motion, but they need more space because they can’t be folded.

Overall, adjustable LED wall lights are very versatile and can be used for general, accent and task lightings, such as desk light and book light.

The range of motion more depends on the joints rather than the type of neck.

Ball joints provide the most versatility.

Different types of necks: jointed, straight, gooseneck

What is the relationship between the shape of the fixture and the light itself?

The shape of the fixture funnels the light in different ways.

You can request a lantern, a canister, a sconce, or a dome.

These all direct the light in different angles.

Lantern and sconce lights have a similar beam shape, but lantern is closer to 360 degrees, whereas sconce lights are pressed to the wall, so the light is cut off by that.

Canister-shaped fixtures let lights out from 2 directions – up and down.

Dome fixtures have the widest beam angle.

At the same time, they are not as protected.

Canister lights are better for accent lighting, and domes are better for general lighting.

Lanterns and sconce lights are fairly versatile, so it depends on the design.

How can outdoor wall lights and indoor wall lights be protected?

Unlike indoor lights, outdoor ones need to be well protected against weather conditions, such as dust, snow, and rain.

For that, you can look at the IP rating of the design.

The first digit after IP corresponds to protection against solids, while the second digit corresponds to protection against liquids.

IP chart

 IP chart

The absolute maximum IP rating you can have is IP69K.

This means that no dust will get in, and the design is protected against high-pressure and high-temperature jets of water.

For outdoor LED wall lights, you need about IP65 or higher.

This means that your light is protected against dust and splashes of water, such as rain.

As for snow, LEDs actually work better in cold weather, so you just have to protect it from water that the snow will turn into.

Finally, corrosion and impacts. Normally, neither indoor nor outdoor lights need protection against corrosive substances.

However, if you are planning to install wall lights in a factory or other industrial facility with toxic substances, some protection is needed.

For this, you can incorporate O-rings and various gaskets into the design, so no toxic gases corrode the LED.

Indoor wall lights are more prone to such corrosion risks since facilities are indoors.

Yet, both indoor and outdoor lights need protection against impacts, which you can achieve by using sturdy materials and making you the actual LED is not showing itself from the shell.

What difference is there between interior wall lights and sconce lights?

Sconce lights are a type of interior wall lights. Sconce fixtures are characterized by upwards directed light.

In the present day, sconces have a modern boxy design, whereas other interior wall lights can be of any shape.

However, originally sconce lights were synonymous with interior wall lights, as well as exterior wall lights.

What are some unique decorative options for LED wall lights?

Besides the shape of the light, you can have interesting lightings, such as colors and patterns.

You can request any color of light, as well as lights that change color or have different colors.

This makes any space look like a festival, and can be used both in residential homes, as well as bars and clubs.

Colored LED wall light

    Colored LED wall light

Another way to use lighting decoratively is using patterns.

For this, the design of the fixture has to have holes in certain places, so that when light passes through, it creates a shape or a pattern on the wall.

This also transforms the space and is perfect for restaurants, galleries, and clubs.

What color temperature is good for wall lights?

Wall lights are used for different purposes, and so are color temperatures.

Thus, let’s look through some color temperatures and see which is good for what purpose.

Starting off with extra warm light at 2500K, it creates a very romantic and relaxing environment, which is great for restaurants and lounges.

Our interior lights and sconce lights will fit your desired aesthetic.

Next, warm light at about 3000K is used for cozy atmospheres, such as in a household or a hotel.

Neutral white light at 4000K is commonly used in offices and stores since it helps focus without being harsh on the eyes.

Finally, you can see daylight, or cool, LED light in laboratories, factories, workshops, and hospitals.

Cool light helps concentrate and is defined to be at 5000K.

Stair lights should be neutral white since they don’t necessarily serve a purpose other than illuminate the steps.

As for outdoor lights, warmer light can be used as garden lighting, whereas cooler light is used for security systems, as it is harsh.

Can I incorporate motion sensors into wall lights?

For sure! You can request the same technology as our LED tube lights with sensors and sensor night lights

There are several motion detection technologies available, such as microwave, infra-red, ultrasound, and even combinations of the above.

Motion-sensing LED wall light

  Motion-sensing LED wall light

We at SMAlux tend to use microwaves, but another common technology is passive infra-red (PIR).

Microwave technology emits waves and analyses reflected waves for motion.

Meanwhile, PIR just scans the space for any infra-red, or heat, waves.

So, it doesn’t emit anything, just analyses.

Motion sensors on your LED wall lights can provide security outside, turning on if an intruder is sensed.

Also, it will light up inside as you are walking around in the middle of the night.

Especially, this technology is perfect for stair light

Also, motion sensors can be implemented into outdoor lights for security purposes, such as our sensor floodlights.

What are ways to dim an LED wall light?

You can request 2 technologies for dimming: pulse width modulation and analog dimming.

Please note that dimming often changes the perception of color temperature, making it not only duller but also warmer.

Effects of dimming

 Effects of dimming

In the PWD method, the LED pulses very quickly.

The faster it pulses, the brighter we perceive the light as.

Thus, you can dim the light by making it pulse slower.

This method is good for saving energy and preventing discoloration of the LED.

However, pulsing light, even if we don’t see it as pulsing, can cause headaches.

Another method is analog dimming, which works by controlling the current going through the LED.

Less current equals to dimmer light.

And yet, this method is less efficient and may lead to the LEDs discolor.

Besides these technical dimming methods, you can incorporate a manual one.

By placing a moveable insert in the top or bottom of the light fixture, the user will be able to adjust the brightness, beam angle and direction by shifting this insert around.

This design works best with cube-shaped wall lights, but most other shapes will work as well.

How are wall lights charged?

LED wall lights can be charged via primary batteries, USB ports, outlets/electrical boxes, and solar panels.

Primary batteries and USB ports aren’t as viable and convenient when used with wall lights.

But that is possible, especially with small and portable wall lights, such as those that aren’t mounted on the wall, but stuck onto it.

Outlets and electrical boxes are the most common ones to be used to charge LED wall lights.

You or your customers just wire the light into the wall and leave it.

This is convenient and require little to no maintenance.

LED wall light with cord

LED wall light with cord

Here, you can either have the light hard-wired or plugged in.

Hard-wired fixtures don’t have exposed wires and are permanently wired into the main electrical system.

Plug-in fixtures are attached to the wall, but have wires running to an outlet.

Both hard-wired and plugged-in wall lights are operated by switches.

Finally, solar panels are great for outdoor wall lights in regions with lots of sunlight.

Then, the panels become highly efficient and eco-friendly.

Solar outdoor wall light

   Solar outdoor wall light

What lumen output is needed for LED wall lights?

Generally, each purpose needs its own measure of lumens per square foot or meter.

Task lighting requires 70-80 lumens per square foot, which means that stair lights and some indoor wall lights need that much.

Hallways need about 10-20 lumens, which is how much accent lighting could supply.

Again, though, 80-90 lumens from wall lights will do the trick.

Other indoor spaces need about that number as well.

Finally, outdoor lights need a higher output, especially if they are used for security.

These could suffice on 90 lumens per square foot, but more is better,

Of course, these are just guidelines, and you are welcome to send us your requirements!

What beam angle should be used in wall lights?

The beam angles for indoor and outdoor wall lights tend to be wide – about 100 degrees – since these are usually used for general lighting.

Sconce lights have narrower beam angles, such as 90 and 40 degrees, since they serve well as accent lights.

Different beam angles

Different beam angles

Finally, stair lights can have any beam angle, with 40-50 degrees being optimal.

Since they are typically placed on the wall, illuminating each step, even very narrow beam will suffice.

How and where can LED wall lights be installed?

Indoor and sconce wall lights can be installed on the walls of an office, a hallway, a gallery, a workshop.

If you are going for task lighting, such as a wall light above the bed for reading, then the light should be about 6-12 inches higher than the user’s shoulder, or a foot away from the workspace.

Plus, LED wall lights should be spaced out to one light per 8-9 feet, or 2 meters.

Outdoor wall lights can be installed near the entrance, along a path around the facility, or on the wall of an outdoor shed.

These need to be strategically placed so they get sunlight (if they are powered by solar energy) and/or illuminate the space correctly.

Strategic placement of outdoor wall lights

Strategic placement of outdoor wall lights

Stair lights can aldo be installed into a step or even into the floor.

If it is weather-sealed, then you can also install it on the patio or deck.

Because these are small lights, they can go pretty much anywhere and be very versatile.

LED wall lights are either wired into the wall or simply stuck onto it with a sticky surface.

Wiring is complicated and requires an electrical box inserted into the wall.

Meanwhile, stuck-on wall lights should be small enough to stick. Such could be reading wall lights and stair lights.

What materials can wall lights be made of?

Typically, LED wall lights are made from ABS, aluminum, sometimes steel.

These are all perfectly good materials to use, but if you want something different, you can request brass, which is great for outdoor wall lights.

These are sturdy and resistant to acidic corrosion, as well as rust.

Although copper is recommended as well, it is prohibited from import material.

Also, keep in mind some restricted for import materials.

Look through your manufacturer’s propositions and reports and stay away from the following materials: copper, nickel alloys, aluminum alloys, natural rubber, silicone, and various CFC compounds.

What LED technologies are used in wall lights?

You can request surface-mounted, chip-on-board, and bulb LEDs in wall lights.

SMDs are densely packed LED chips that provide a lot of light and don’t suffer from overheating as much as other LED technologies.

They are widely used in many LED lights aside from wall ones, such as tube lights and track lights

Plus, they can be made into a bulb, increasing its brightness and efficiency.

SMD bulb

   SMD bulb

The COB technology also consists of densely packed chips, but these are even more dense, looking like a continuous yellow strip.

This means that COB technology is very bright, but also prone to overheating.

COB wall light

These are used in a variety of lights as well, both big and small.

They also have very wide beams.

These are especially great for decorative lighting and work well with indoor wall lights and sconce lights.

Meanwhile, SMD or COB is better for outdoor wall lights and stair lights.

Finally, 5mm LEDs are also used in wall lights, but more so in outdoor lights.

These are not as bright as chips, but when there are many of them, they are efficient and inexpensive.

What is the future of the LED market?

The global LED market is forecasted to grow at a rate of 13% to reach 54.28 billion USD by 2022.

Europe has the biggest demand for LED lights, mainly for residential purposes such as lighting bathrooms, hallways, and kitchens.

This, of course, is a perfect use of LED wall lights.

The market with the next biggest demand is North America, where lights are needed for architectural applications, such as various indoor and outdoor lights.

Overall, LEDs are on the rise, as well as Chinese production is becoming more and more powerful, so importing LED wall lights is the way to go.
